Profile: Lynn Scott
Why go for customised storage rather than doing it yourself?
Lynn Scott says it's not because customers don't have a good eye for design and storage ideas.
"Most people have a good idea, from reading magazines and what they've seen on their travels," admits Lynn.
"But at Creative By Design we know how to tailor our product to suit the individual's needs and take storage design to a whole new level. It's similar to a house design - a builder will build you a beautiful home but an architect will design a stunning home."
Lynn has spent years of training and practice to offer her customers the best advice for their storage solutions - from wardrobes and home offices, to pantries and garages.
Over the past 17 years, Lynn's business has worked with countless Sydneysiders, even a few celebrities and well-known personalities.
"Overall though, it's the regular customer who takes the time to let us know just how much we have influenced their lives that is most rewarding," says Lynn.
What first attracted Lynn to the Creative By Design business - being Australian-owned and supporting Australian design and manufacture - still holds today.
"We are proudly an Australian company, owned and operated. Creative By Design takes the initiative to support young Australian furniture designers, and we care about where our materials are sourced and produced. We have a social conscience and I am very proud to be a part of that."

"Don’t cull your wardrobe! There’s a better way," say Kim Newton.
Kim has helped countless Western Australians to take the mess - and the stress out of their lives with customised storage design over the past decade.
Alongside her husband and business partners, Kim opened the Creative By Design franchise in WA to complement their previous building expertise.
Kim credits the great support as part of a franchise as contributing to their success.
Not to mention the many happy customers that have enjoyed the relief from stress that Creative By Design has provided.
"Our customers instantly feel the positive effects on their lives, whether it’s a wardrobe, a home office or perhaps a garage that we help them to sort," says Kim.

Kim loves to travel and experience WA with her family, which has given her a great insight into the lifestyle of Western Australians.
So what’s the antidote to the dreaded wardrobe cull?
It’s simple, says Kim.
"Once you have your new wardrobe installed by Creative By Design, hang all of your clothes with the hangers facing the same way," advises Kim.
"As you wear and wash your clothes, return them to the wardrobe with the hangers facing the opposite way. After six months you will see exactly what you haven’t worn. Make your decisions then."

Lynn’s Stress-Buster Tips
- Shoes off the floor
- It’s too easy for shoes to become a messy jumble without dedicated storage for each pair
- A place for everything
- It’s not just the clothes on the hangers. Accessories like ties, scarves and belts should have their own place
- Ban drawers
- Deep drawers can "hide" clothes and other items from view, making it easy to forget about them
- Space between hangers
- All that washing and ironing can be wasted if the clothes are bunched up too tightly together
- If it’s broken, don’t fix it
- Torn clothing, broken shoes - the reality is they probably won’t get repaired so throw them out and make room for other items
Walk Right In
The luxury of the walk-in wardrobe is enjoying a renaissance, as fashion continues its migration from the catwalks into the home.
Carrie from Sex & the City is arguably the girl who started it all. But you don’t need to marry Mr Big to possess an enviable walk-in wardrobe.
Lynn Scott, storage expert from Creative By Design, says that as our fashion collections have grown, so has our desire to accom-modate them. A walk-in wardrobe can be an alcove or a whole room, designed so you can see everything contained within it.
"It’s easy to inject a bit of luxury into any walk-in wardrobe," she says. "The idea of having that special area dedicated to your clothes, shoes and accessories is an indulgent concept so the fitout needs to reflect this."
Lynn’s company Creative By Design has recently seen growth in demand for luxurious walk-in wardrobes that have features from plush seating to individual storage for more than 100 pairs of shoes.
"We always recommend transparent fronted drawers or doors, which work exceptionally well in walk-ins, by allowing you to see all the precious items stored behind them," explains Lynn. "In a practical sense, the transparent fronts also help us to remember exactly which items are stored there."
The real luxury of a walk-in wardrobe is that it can be customised to suit your belongings with no concerns for maximising space. Tie and belt racks, drawers for accessories and jewellery are important little touches.
In the past few months, colour and texture are also becoming a part of walk-in wardrobe design, a bold move away from the safety of white. High-gloss finishes and luxury veneers, along with coffee and taupe colours are now being seen.
"Interior design is also fashion, and style-conscious people are injecting the new sense of colour into their joinery, not just their clothes," says Lynn. "In a walk-in wardrobe the finishes as well as the size are what add the wow factor."
The Girl Who Started it All
Those irrepressible girls are now taking on interior fashions in the hugely popular Sex & the City 2 - with their style influence now spreading across home decorating trends.
From sofas to dining tables, the interior design world has acknowledged the film’s influence.
"Carrie’s wardrobe is the Rolls Royce of walk-ins, it’s certainly luxurious with beautiful timber finishes and an ottoman in the middle," says Lynn Scott of Creative By Design. "A walk-in that takes an entire room is the ultimate luxury."
Arguably the girl who started it all, Carrie says, "I like my money where I can see it, hanging in my wardrobe."
Lynn observes that Carrie is a slight exaggeration of what is actually happening for most of us - our collections of clothes, shoes and accessories are expanding and our wardrobes are expanding with them.
